World No 1 Iga Swiatek is thrilled to be back in Indian Wells as she absolutely loves the vibe and atmosphere in the desert. Swiatek, 21, captured her first Indian Wells title after beating Maria Sakkari in last year’s final at the tournament.
Ahead of her Indian Wells title defense, Swiatek shared a message. “Peaceful mornings, a lot of work done every single day, beautiful landscape. So, so good to be back in tennis paradise! Hi, BNP Paribas Open,” Swiatek tweeted.
Last year, Swiatek absolutely dominated the Sunshine Double as she made it all the way in Indian Wells and Miami.
Going into this year’s WTA 1000 events in Indian Wells and Miami, Swiatek is considered the top favorite to win it all. Also, Swiatek is in a fine form. In mid-February, Swiatek won her first title of the year in Doha. The following week, Swiatek made the Doha final before suffering a surprise defeat to Barbora Krejcikova.
Two days after the Dubai final loss, Swiatek urged her fans to avoid putting unrealistic expectations on her. “Yesterday I was still in Dubai, today I’m in Warsaw, soon in Indian Wells. These last few weeks were intense, and challenging but we did a lot of good work and progress.
I enjoyed tournaments in Doha and Dubai and even though I lost the final in Dubai (huge congrats Barbora!) my level was good despite the infection and I gave it all I could at the moment. I can see that some of you have higher expectations of me but well.
I’m just human. I will keep my standards high, I will enjoy my time on tour and keep working hard. At the end of the day that is all I can control. My effort and engagement. Thank you all for the support and see you soon!” Swiatek said in a message posted on her Twitter last Monday. It remains to be seen if Swiatek can defend her titles in Indian Wells and Miami.
